The Presence

Horror, Germany 2014

Hoping to film paranormal activity, three friends break into an abandoned castle, where an evil presence soon hounds them into terror and madness. Markus (Matthias Dietrich) is an anthropology student with an unusual focus: his studies are devoted to the forms of popular superstition and the phenomenon of poltergeists. Everything could remain pretty theoretical, but Markus is given the opportunity to turn gray theory into spooky practice. His friend Lukas (Henning Nöhren) plans to take a trip to a castle where there are supposedly ghosts, camera at the ready. The aim: to record paranormal activity with the camera at the ready! With Markus' girlfriend Rebecca (Liv Lisa Fries) in tow, who is only told what's in store for her during the trip, the three friends drive to a moated castle and set up camp for the night. The new arrivals are looking forward to a fun-filled day, but instead pure horror awaits them: something demonic really does seem to be going around the castle. Markus, Lukas and Rebecca soon realize that they are not alone... “Blair Witch Project” - only “Made in Germany” and set in a castle instead of in the depths of the woods. This comparison comes to mind when you watch Daniele Greco's horror film based on found video footage. The result is a "Little shocker. Recommended for genre fans." (Cinema) "Grieco combines several found-footage strategies - in addition to the obligatory shaky shots, he also uses shots reminiscent of the surveillance images from Paranormal Activity. On top of this, he works with sudden zooms and disturbances that are intended to express the effect of the supernatural on the technology. The film's mock-documentary gesture is emphasized by text overlays that identify what is shown at the beginning, for example, as video footage seized at the crime scene. In the staging of the haunting, Grieco uses the standard repertoire of found-footage horror to generate moments of shock." (Andreas Köhnemann, on: kino-zeit.de) "DIE PRÄSENZ does not shine with originality, but is once again a film that makes use of formulas that have already been tried and tested abroad for a German production. But at least the movie does this quite well. “The Presence” doesn't have to hide behind role models like “The Blair Witch Project” or “Paranormal Activity” (2007)." (Gregor Torinus, on: spielfilm.de)
