For the documentary "Behind the Headlines", Germany's largest quality daily newspaper opens the door to its world-renowned investigative department for the first time and allows an intimate insight into work that is otherwise carried out in strict secrecy. Two years after breaking the story of the Panama Papers, the journalists at the investigative desk of Süddeutsche Zeitung face new challenges: they want to find out who killed their colleague, Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galicia with whom they worked on the Panama Paperse. They are given material about a mysterious arms dealer linked to the Iranian nuclear missile program. But things are really coming to a head when in the spring of 2019, they are presented with a secret video incriminating Austrian Vice Chancellor HC Strache. In his film, Daniel Sager successfully uncovers the scrupulous work that goes into a story before it breaks. He shows how the Ibiza video material is carefully scrutinized to establish its authenticity, and how the editorial team ponders legal consequences and safeguards before they go to press. The film is an important contribution to the discussion about credibility and the role of the media in democratic societies.
