Clara

Romance/Society, Colombia 2022

At the age of 13, Aseneth discovered that Lilia, whom she had previously believed to be her aunt, was in fact her mother's partner and lover. Then they separated, and Aseneth never saw Lilia again. Twenty-seven years later, Aseneth Suárez Ruiz is a filmmaker and decides to have a confidential conversation with her mother Clara, in which they both remember Lilia, who left such a deep mark on their lives. Shortly before becoming a mother herself, the Colombian documentary filmmaker approaches her mother from a new perspective, creating space for an encounter full of understanding. Aseneth Suárez Ruiz filmed regularly for her documentary over a period of three years. In the first phase, she shot about 40 hours of footage, after which the director moved to a research and writing residency in Bogliasco, Italy, where she met a same-sex writer couple. The encounter inspired her to resume her conversation with her mother in order to delve deeper into Lilia's story. Aseneth Suárez Ruiz says of this final phase: ‘In view of the material, I often had to pause, remain silent, take a step back and then come back to continue listening. Her words changed, I began to understand them, and the dialogue became real and healing for both of us.’ Clara is an intimate and sincere documentary film that depicts the relationship between a mother and her daughter as a tender and loving exchange between generations. Aseneth Suárez Ruiz: ‘Our conversations about the past help us to cope with our present.’
