Wedding Night - End of the Song (Hochzäitsnuecht)

Book adaptation/Classics, Luxembourg 1992

The daughter of an industrialist and the son of an impoverished family celebrate their wedding. The groom's mother hopes to climb the social ladder and enrich herself, while the bride's father watches over the wedding party with an iron fist. Not only is the appearance of a respectable life deceptive, but the marriage is also ill-fated: the newlyweds are drug addicts. During the celebration, the bride disappears to get heroin, and the groom embarks on a nighttime odyssey that ends in destruction. A disillusioning picture of a society filled with a death wish. Director Pol Cruchten's first feature film, it is also the first Luxembourgish film to have been selected for the Cannes Festival. A few months later, it won the Max Ophüls Prize at the Saarbrücken Film Festival. It is one of the films that have left their mark on Luxembourg cinema and brought it international recognition. Adapted from the play ‘Hochzeitsnacht’ by Ernst M. Binder. Film from the CNA archive.
