Pepe Danquart's superbly photographed road movie explores Italy in 2017, and simultaneously takes a a deep dive into what the country was like 60 years previously - when Pier Paolo Pasolini and photographer Paolo Di Paolo took the very same trajectory arount the Italian coastline in the summer of 1959. Both the past and the present are times of great upheaval. Back in Pasolini's days, the arrival of mass tourism changed the face of Italy forever. As did the modernisation of the manufacturing industries which some said catapulted parts of Italy from the third into the first world. Northbound migration was a part of the change already back then, but today, the migrants come from different places than in the 1950s. Danquart's atmospheric portrait of the present is interspersed with stark echoes of the past, between disillusioned observation and the hypnotic beauty of the landscapes.
