Once Upon a Time in Calcutta

Drama, Norway/India 2021

This Bengali-language social drama is set in Kolkata and follows Ela (Sreelekha Mitra), a young mother who wants to start a new, independent life after the death of her daughter and the breakdown of her marriage. She dreams of having her own home, but is denied a bank loan. To fulfill her wish, she enters into risky deals with her boss, who runs a Ponzi scheme. At the same time, she tries to get back her share of an old family theater, which brings her into conflict with her estranged stepbrother. In the midst of these struggles, her childhood sweetheart reappears and gives her hope—until Ela realizes that she is not the only one fighting for survival in a city full of greed and illusions. The film is a critical reflection on the transformation of Kolkata, inspired by real events. It addresses the struggle for identity, love, and dignity in a metropolis caught between tradition and modernization. It premiered at the Venice Film Festival and won several international awards for directing and acting.
