Azadi

Society/Short Film, Netherlands/Belgium 2018

In 2016, a contentious agreement was forged between the European Union and Turkey with the aim of curbing the perilous journey undertaken by refugees crossing to the Greek islands. For those refugees who successfully reach these islands, their asylum claims remain in a state of indefinite limbo. This thought-provoking documentary offers an intimate glimpse into the unique and evolving transit hub that the island of Lesbos has transformed into. It does so through the perspectives of two Pakistani refugees and the interconnected lives of a close-knit local fishing community.
