The Triangle

Drama/Science Fiction, United States/United Kingdom 2005

After several of his ships have disappeared, filthy rich billionaire Eric Benirall (Sam Neill) hires some experts to investigate his unexplained losses in the legendary region of the “Bermuda Triangle”. They include reporter Howard Thomas (Eric Stoltz), oil platform engineer Emily, meteorologist Bruce and parapsychologist Stan, who is also known as a clairvoyant or charlatan depending on his success. Together they travel near the Bermuda Islands and discover eerie phenomena, time travel and a government conspiracy. But time is running out for the motley crew and their search for the truth to prevent an impending catastrophe... A notorious, centuries-old myth, plenty of atmosphere and a strong cast: Craig R. Baxley's mini-series needs nothing more to captivate its audience in a flash with its suspenseful plot. With its clever mix of mystery, science thriller and sci-fi action, including some pretty surprising twists and turns, “The Triangle”, as it was originally titled, is a highlight for genre fans. The elaborate multi-part series even managed to win an Emmy for its successful visual effects. "As with most fare involving cosmic burps in the time-space continuum, it’s best not to dwell too intently on the silliness that transpires. [...] Fortunately, the cast proves good company and brings welcome gravity to the proceedings, from Stoltz as the skeptical journalist estranged from his family to Davison as the medium whose find-the-missing-kid act has seen better days. Sci Fi and sister net USA ('The 4400') have made their mark with this kind of big-ticket fare, catering to a core audience that enjoys a good thrill ride. Not a bad plan for a basic cabler, even if all “The Triangle’s” sides never quite come together." (Brian Lawry, on: variety.com) Reporter Howard Thomas is hired by a billionaire to investigate the Bermuda Triangle. He forms a team with oceanographer Emily Patterson, meteorologist Bruce Geller, and psychic Stan Latham. While investigating the disappearance of several ships, they encounter strange phenomena and realize that the secrets of the triangle are more dangerous than expected.
